How To Boost Your Immune System & Stop That Cold

As frustrating as the early symptoms of a cold are, your body is actually doing you a favour. That sore throat and lack of energy is a sign that your body is losing an internal battle. You need to send in back up. And Mum was right about what micro-nutrient you need to send in. Vitamin C. But forget the orange flavoured sugar tablet.

How To Kill A Cold Quickly

The highest sources of vitamin C are:

  • Camu camu – Peruvian superfood that you can get in powder form
  • Gubinge (Kakadu Plum) – local Australian bush tucker that is available in freeze-dried powder form
  • Papaya
  • Broccoli
  • Green leafs – kale, spinach etc
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Strawberries
  • Guava
  • Kiwifruit
  • Pineapple
  • Lemon
  • Orange

I pull out the blender and make a concoction with whichever ingredients above I have access to. It’s similar to a smoothie in technique but I use that word reluctantly because this isn’t creamy and delicious. It’s about medicinal function, not flavour.

Vitamin C Overdose Recipe

  • Camu Camu  - 1 teaspoon (1230% of your daily vitamin c needs!)
  • Lemon, peeled - 1
  • Spinach - 2 handfuls
  • Coconut water - 2 cups
  • Ginger, peeled - 2 inch piece

Not for the faint hearted but this has over 20 times your vitamin C needs. 20 times! Coconut water is great for hydrating electrolytes as well. Ginger is great for nausea and stomach relief, not necessarily common symptoms, but it will attack inflammation. Organic turmeric would have a similar impact.

I make this Vitamin C Overdose twice per day. It’s rare that I need to do this longer than two days.

The Secondary Immune Boosting Unit

There's always room for more soldiers in the good fight. My secondary unit is pathogen killing apple cider vinegar. You can gargle it with water to help with a sore throat or just drink it to thin mucus and help that blocked nose. The digestive harmony that apple cider vinegar creates in the stomach will also strengthen your body’s immune system.

I ‘shoot’ 20-30mls of apple cider vinegar by itself. However, you can use this recipe for a much better flavour. Raw honey has tremendous anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties as well, making it the perfect partner.

  • 20 mls apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • 2 cups of water

Shake, stir or blend together. Then, “Get In My Belly”.

Rest and Repair

Whilst I've been able to cure colds with 'sweating it out' exercise and whiskey in years past, I now play the percentages. Limit all your stresses and go to bed early. 9-10 hours of sleep will dramatically help your body win the good fight.

What's your secret cold killing strategy?
