The ol' detox smoothie. I turn to these guys after a holiday. That's the most common time my salad and smoothie consciousness goes out the window.
Annual trips to New York are supposed to be healthy times with the in-laws but I find myself eating eight meals a day. Most of which are bagels, pizza and booze. And I avoid the gym like it's a dentist.
Two weeks of indulgence will bring the self loathing to such a level that I can't wait to get home and return to health. Green smoothies with lemon is the tonic. They flush out the New York fun and restore my palate to one that craves veggies rather than pizza slices.
You can use any green leaf that you like, but my choices are always the familiar ones. Spinach, kale and raw broccoli. Raw broccoli is a little bitter, and I prefer it steamed, but it's such a great detoxer. It contains the most amount of sulforaphane, a potent liver boosting enzyme, than any food we normally eat. Broccoli sprouts are even better but they have to be done at home with a sprouting kit (which requires this and this).
Lemon, another liver aid, takes things further. However, that sourness isn't for everyone so I add a teaspoon of honey or a plant-based protein powder to sweeten it up. A great homemade protein recipe is oats, flaxseeds, vanilla powder and stevia.
Add some fibre and vitamin C dense banana, along with hydrating coconut water, and you've got a winner. Watch the impact this combo has on your skin too. Flushing out the nasties and freshening you up. Three days of these and you'll be back on track.
